mystery of Manhattan in the '40s, Coffey explores the alleys and
nightclubs of New York in the classic style.
Protagonist Patrick Grimes,
just returned from the front of WWII, is a rewrite man for a daily
newspaper who stumbles into a murder. When the wrong man is arrested,
Grimes sets out to find the real killer and stumbles into a world of
temptation, corruption and danger. The book offers insights into the
workings of the newspaper world of another era, but one can't help hearing
echoes of today's sensational media.

Lin, a former editor at The Threepenny Review, received a Fulbright Fellowship to Taiwan in 2001-2002. The result of that year is The Foreigner, her shattering debut novel available this month as a Picador paperback original.
Following the death of his mother, Emerson Chang, a mild-mannered, bachelor and financial analyst, journeys to Taipei to scatter her ashes and to bring an inheritance to his younger brother, Little P., a member of the Taiwanese criminal underworld whose crimes have estranged him from his family. But the younger brother has commited a crime that has estranged him from the rest of the family and Emerson makes it his duty to find out what the crime is and save what's left of his family.
The mystery, which received an starred review in Publishers Weekly magazine, explores the underbelly of Taiwan and the need for family.
