Nancy Means Wright
Vermont author Nancy Means Wright explores the world of 18th-century feminist, philosopher and writer Mary Wollstonecraft in Midnight Fires (Perserverance Press, $14.95), and discusses this new mystery novel during an appearance on Friday, May 28 at 7 p.m. at Mystery on Main Street. Nancy Means Wright, author of the Vermont-based series featuring Ruth Willmarth (including Poison Apples and Mad Cow Nightmare), will talk about Wollstonecraft's life and times, and how she became the inspiration of this new series.
Midnight Fires finds Mary Wollstonecraft, who will one day be the mother of Mary Shelly (author of Frankenstein), heading for Ireland to become what she terms "that most humiliating of occupations" —a governess. And while her experiences there would inspire incidents in her only children's book, in Midnight Fires she finds herself in an Ireland subjected to British rule and in a castle surrounded by suspicious deaths. But as Mary explores the possibilities that poet George Ogle or a local tenant have reason for murder, she never loses sight of her devotion to her charges and her need for an independent life.
Publishers Weekly has called Midnight Fires "captivating..." and fans of historical fiction will discovered an adventure fraught with class tension and atmospheric mystery.
